About the Item

Small commode "à la Grecque"" Transition period 1765-1770 by JF Leleu and JME. Mahogany veneer model central projection opening by three drawers in front, two free passes. The bottom drawer making through office sports a bronze. The rounded amounts ending with curved legs. Beautiful ornamentation of gilded bronze which falls, clogs, escutcheons, pull rings, lamp ass. Above original white marble. (partly illegible inscription on the reverse: Commode... owned and inventory number). A clever system to lock the top drawer with a lock in the middle. JF LELEU and JME stamp for the punch guild on the rear right amount. Size: Width 80 cm; height 80cm; depth 47 cm. This type of dresser is directly inspired models delivered by JF Oeben has the Marquise de Pompadour 1762. This model was then an important innovation that prefigures Neoclassicism and the Louis XVI style. Jean Francois Leleu is a major French cabinetmaker of the second half of the 18th century. Trained in the workshop of the cabinetmaker Jean King François Oeben, he thinks he can take over the workshop after the death of the master only thanks to his skills. (It was the preferred Oeben). But it was not counting on another apprentice JH Riesener who monopolizes the workshop by marrying the widow and takes over the royal orders! Be born when a major rivalry whose heyday was the altercation between the two cabinet in August 1765. Leleu has to settle his account and has access to the Masters in 1764. It is becoming the most neoclassical of his time. Rigor and perfect technical mastery earned him many prestigious commissions including the Countess Du Barry, princes of Condé ... While Riesener too tied to the monarchy ended his days penniless, Leleu live in prosperity until his death .... Our model, very small, is a work of the early years Leleu as a master towards 1765/1770, you can still feel the strong influence of Jean François Oeben. The quality of manufacture, simple shapes and choice of wood are typical of production.
