About the Item
The commode does not bear a maker’s stamp (which was not uncommon during this period), nor has the ébéniste been conclusively identified. However, it is clear that he was a great master of the period, working in the circle of André Charles Boulle (1642-1732). There is a probability that the commode could be the work of Auburtin Gaudron, who like Boulle specialized in the most sumptuous and lavishly designed inlaid decoration.
Auburtin Gaudron
Auburtin Gaudron worked during the latter part of the seventeenth century and into the early years of the eighteenth for the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne during the reign of King Louis XIV. His workshop was in rue Saint-Honoré where he also supplied furniture to the Dauphin and Dauphine, Madame de Maintenon, the duc d’Anjou, the duc de Chartres, the prince de Condé, and other important clientele.
