French Regence Chest of Drawers with Ormolu Fittings, Early 18th Century

About the Item

Antique French Regence chest of drawers France Kingwood early 18th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 84 x 130 x 65 cm Description: Representative Regence chest of drawers in dark wood with light-coloured contrasting ormolu fittings. Three-tier piece of furniture standing on slightly flared feet. The dark rosewood, also known as violet or kingwood, has a wonderful, warm colour tone and fantastic colour variations in the grain. The veneers are predominantly laid diagonally and framed on the drawer fronts as well as on the sides. The elaborate yet not overly lavish bronze ornamentation stands out in beautiful contrast to the dark wood. We see rocaille-style keyhole surrounds and acanthus-shaped handles. Female busts, so-called espagnolettes, are mounted at the top of the pilaster strips and dominate the view of the furniture not only from the front, but also from the side. The counterpoint to this is provided by the foot fittings in the form of shells and C-sweeps. The loosely laid slab of "Rouge de Rance" marble is unusually light in colour and has breathtaking inclusions. All corner joints are neatly dovetailed, the bottoms of the drawers are nailed into the rebate, typical of the period. Fixed shelves inside the carcase, so-called dust shelves, underline the outstanding quality of the cabinetmaker's work. The shape and design of the piece of furniture are reminiscent of works by the Parisian master Etienne Doirat (1675-1732). A similar chest of drawers can be found in the reference book: Kjellberg - Le Mobilier du XVIIIe Siecle p. 304. Condition: Refurbished and suitable for everyday use. A key is present.
