18th Century Swedish Rococo Chest of Drawers, Louis XV, circa 1760

About the Item

Heavily built rococo chest of drawers Sweden Elm, maple, walnut around 1760 Dimensions: H x W x D: 81 x 121 x 58 cm Description: Exceptionally strongly built rococo chest of drawers from the mid-18th century. Three-bay piece of furniture with original bronze fittings and original locks. The drawers follow the shape of the corpus, which means that not only the fronts but also the sides of the drawers are slightly rounded. This can be seen clearly in the photo, which shows the drawer from the back. This type of finish requires the highest level of craftsmanship. The locks also follow the curved shape of the drawer fronts. The veneer is elaborate yet discreet. Elaborate, on the one hand, because it is quite complicated to veneer such strong curves with even pressure, and on the other hand, because the individual pieces of veneer are parquet-finished as diamond-shaped surfaces - which is also a challenge in terms of craftsmanship, given the strong curves. On the other hand, the design achieved by the veneer is quite discreet. A low-grain elm wood was chosen, whose individual surfaces, bordered by a maple thread inlay, were laid against each other in grain opposition. The walnut veneered edges of the piece of furniture provide visual reinforcement of the contours. Another highlight of the piece of furniture is the top plate, which is coloured to give the impression of a marble top. Condition: Restored and in good condition for everyday use. The drawers run smoothly, the locks work. The back panel was replaced in an earlier restoration. A piece of furniture comparable in form and design can be found in the following reference book: Lucien Zinutti - Il Linguaggio del Mobile Antico p. 400
