A George III Mahogany Serpentine Chest of Drawers, c.1765 A very fine George III chest of drawers, of pleasingly tight form and displaying an exuberantly serpentine front. With original gilt bronze handles in the Rococo style, foliate carved leading edge and canted corners, on ogee bracket feet. In the manner of cabinetmaker Philip Bell, who produced ‘al sorts of ye finest Cabinet Goods… Looking Glasses… Coach Glasses & Chairs… at Reasonable Rates’ from his workshop in St Paul’s Churchyard between 1758 and 1774. A commode by Philip Bell (c.1760) alike in form, hardware and foliate detailing, is shown in ‘Marked London Furniture 1700-1840’ by C. Gilbert, p.94, pl.89.
