About the Item

This massive wooden wedding chest was made the earliest part of the 19th century in Gujarat, India. The chest originally contained dowry items (such as clothing and blankets) and was subsequently used for household valuables of all kinds. The particular piece is build like a strong box and elaborately carved. It comprise with many hidden compartments within. The original pigments are faded now but it was originally quite colorful. This piece is a completely original and unrestored - a kind of furniture fossil that is increasingly rare. The teakwood used in its construction protected against moisture and also repelled insects. The faintly sweet, fragrant scent of teak oil repels all the creatures that would otherwise feast on the precious silks stored within.
