Louis-philippe Chest Of Drawers In Burr Walnut Mid-19th Century
About the Item
This elegant Louis-Philippe period commode, dating from the mid-19th century, beautifully reflects the excellence of traditional French craftsmanship. Crafted from carefully selected burl walnut, it features a stunning “butterfly-wing” bookmatched veneer, whose symmetrical grain patterns enhance the natural waves of the wood.
The artisan who created this piece demonstrated remarkable skill: each sheet of walnut veneer was meticulously chosen and arranged according to a precise layout, resulting in a harmonious and visually striking composition. The frame is mortise-and-tenon joined, and the dovetailed drawers speak to the high quality of construction.
The commode opens with five drawers:
• A top frieze drawer with a soft doucine curve integrated into the belt,
• Three spacious central drawers,
• A cleverly hidden secret drawer within the plinth.
Original escutcheons and one working period key are preserved.
The piece rests on sturdy block feet (pieds patins) and features a fully paneled solid wood back. No restorations have been made, and its condition is outstanding.
It is crowned by an original Gris Saint-Anne marble top, pristine and subtly veined. Its elegant grey hue offers a refined contrast to the warmth of the walnut, enhancing the piece’s graceful proportions.
Discovered in a stately home in the Loire Valley, this commode has been cherished and carefully passed down through generations, bearing witness to a rich family heritage.
The drawers have been cleaned and glide smoothly – the piece is ready for use and will complement both classic and contemporary interiors, whether placed in a bedroom, dining room, entrance hall or office.
