About the Item

A Fine Louis XVI Style mahogany and Marquetry Inlaid neoclassical breakfront commode in the manner of Jean-Henri Riesener. French, circa 1890. The bronzes stamped to the reverse ‘MK’. This fine commode has a shaped Carrara Bianco marble top above a case of shallow breakfront form, with two large drawers, set beneath three frieze drawers mounted with guilloche and rosette running pattern. The commode is veneered sans traverse with a marquetry panel depicting a basket of flowers, framed by panels of stylised foliate parquetry. The panels are set within a frame of veneers and gilt bronze mouldings, with ribbon tied handles and paterae. The angles mounted with finely cast acanthus and foliate mounts and the sides concave in profile. The commode is raised on out-swept legs terminating in lion paw feet. This design for this exceptional commode is drawn from a body of work by Reisener that was defined by central panels of marquetry, usually of baskets or vases issuing flowers set against a background of stained sycamore veneer. Two distinct forms are apparent, those incorporating rectangular marquetry panels and those with a trapezoidal central projection. Of the first type the best known example is preserved at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, formerly the John Jones collection, dated around 1776-1780 (inv. 1087-1882). Further examples include two commodes delivered in 1780 for the Queen’s first apartment at Compiègne. Examples of the second type, with trapezoidal panels, include a chest of drawers delivered to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne in December 1776 for the apartment of the Contrôleur Général Des Finances and one delivered for the King's service at the Petit Trianon in 1777, preserved in the castles of Versailles and Trianon (inv. V5198). A distinctly nineteenth century approach to the decoration of the present commode includes the adoption of panels of stylised rosette and interlaced lattice work on the drawer fronts. This motif is inspired by another of Riesener's most famous designs, namely the celebrated commode supplied in 1776 to Louis XVI for his cabinet intérieur at Fontainebleau. Other notable examples include the commode supplied for the bedchamber at Versailles of the Comtesse de Provence, latterly in the music room at Hamilton Palace and now at Waddesdon Manor and an example made for Marie-Antoinette in the 1780s, and also formerly in the collection of the Duke of Hamilton at Hamilton Palace, now in the Frick Collection. This geometric equivalent of the inlaid brass and tortoiseshell work of André-Charles Boulle; this distinctive device adopted by Riesener was ultimately derived from loose interpretations of Japanese and Chinese lacquer. In this fine commode we therefore see a successful fusion of two characteristic Riesener designs; the commode combining a rectangular central marquetry panel with stylised, parquetry inlaid drawer fronts. The result is immediately recognisable as Riesener but within the decorative framework of the latter part of the nineteenth century. Jean-Henri Riesener (1735-1806) lived in Paris and was the foremost cabinet-maker of his generation and the successor to the court patronage of Jean-Francois Œben, whose widow he married in 1767. From 1774 to 1784, Riesener supplied more than 938,000 livres worth of furniture to the Garde-Meuble Royal. He was responsible for many important contributions to the formation of the Louis XVI style in France, of which he was undoubtedly the master. Riesener began his career for the monarchy with the roll-top desk for Louis XV placed in his inner study. Commissioned in 1760 from his father-in-law and master Œben, it is a piece of furniture exceptional for its novelty, the refinement of its marquetry, the quality of its bronze details and above all the ingeniousness of its mechanism: all the desk closes with a single turn of the key and opens just by pressing a button. Completed in 1769, it was modified by him during the Revolution when he had to remove the royal symbols. The prestige of this piece of furniture was immense and definitively established the reputation of Riesener. From this time on, there was no shortage of commissions from the court and for ten years he was the principal supplier to the royal residences. But his outrageous prices lost him a part of his clientele which turned to his rival Benneman. Marie-Antoinette, however, remained faithful to him. Riesener produced his most graceful and innovative pieces of furniture for Marie-Antoinette: In particular for her boudoir at Fontainebleau, he produced fragile furniture decorated with mother of pearl that was unique in its genre. Pearl was a particularly exotic material at that time and using it to cover the entire surface of an object was the height of luxury. His furniture was much copied during the nineteenth century, in particular the 'Bureau du Roi' at Versailles, of which a superb version was made for the 4th Marquess of Hertford and is now in the Wallace Collection. Louis XVI Style Commode after the Model by Leleu by François Linke, circa 1910
By François Linke
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
An important Louis XVI style gilt bronze-mounted commode, after the model by Jean-Francois Leleu by François Linke. French, circa 1910. Linke index number: 1127. Linke title: 'Commode Louis XVI, Bois d'amarante et de rose.' Signed ‘Linke’ to the right-hand side chute. This distinguished commode is quarter veneered in mahogany with bois de violette banding and boxwood stringing. It is furnished with finely cast gilt-bronze mounts and surmounted by a brèche violette marble top. It appears that Linke bought the rights to make this commode from the Vente Cueunières in 1902, although there is no trace of it being made by him until the summer of 1908 and there is no entry in the Blue Daybooks for this model. The green registres have two pages devoted to the making of the commodes, the first at a cost of 1,540 and 40 centimes, with eight more made in the intervening years, the last, a pair, in 1927 with the cost price escalating to 8,529 francs. The registre is not entirely clear, but it appears that Clément Linke, father and son, made the locks for this model. The cabinetmaking was exclusively by Guntren who took 496 hours per commode, paid 85 centimes in 1908 rising to 5 francs 75 cents for the last pair. Linke priced this commode at 3,000 French francs, noting in his book 'original est de Leleu est à Trianon.' The original commode by Leleu, on loan from the Petit Trianon, is shown in a line engraving in the retrospective part of the Exposition de l' Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 1882, De Champeau & Others, 'Les arts du bois,' pub. Quantin, 1883, p. 80. The commode entered the Petit Trianon in 1867 on the occasion of an earlier exhibition dedicated to the memory of Marie-Antoinette, organised under the patronage of the Empress Eugénie. Jean-François Leleu A pupil and later collaborator with Jean-François Oeben, Jean-François Leleu became maître on the latter’s death in 1763. His work can be divided into two concurrent but distinct styles: the first owing more to the legacy of Oeben, being of large, solid forms, more noble in style; the second, although retaining the clean, definite lines of the first, being an exercise in elegance and understatement. It is this second style for which Leleu is chiefly remembered and which the present commode, with its lightly bombé form and restrained frieze mounts, is a principal example.
