Chest of drawers in walnut with elm veneer; the first drawer at the top is "secret", so it has no handles and is less capacious, the other three are visible, have elaborate bronze locks with keys and are much more spacious; under the "secret" drawer, on the sides, there are two beautiful decorations in burnished bronze in the shape of a woman's head; another classical feature are the two lion's paws that finish the bottom of the cabinet; the upper floor is made of white marble of Carrara (Italy) which is extracted from the quarries of the Apuan Alps in the territory of Carrara, universally known as one of the most valuable marbles in the world. It is one of the varieties of the famous pietra viva and it is no coincidence that all the greatest sculptors and artists in history (Michelangelo, Donatello, Bernini, Canova) have created their most famous works in this excellent variety of marble, with such elegant colors that it seems almost ethereal. The chest of drawers was made between 1850 and 1853 in a traditional artisan workshop in the vicinity of Paris, most likely in the medieval village of Provins, because it was purchased by us in an antique market in the area. The style is a classic of the Restoration period, after the reign of Louis XVIII during which any reference to the Empire is abandoned and a more gentle and comfortable style is welcomed, the furniture is built on the basis of that Empire style but lose their majesty and become lighter and more linear. For its realization has been used an exceptional quality of European walnut: it is a type of wood that for its rich color, dimensional stability, shock resistance, and strength is widely used in high-end furniture, the entire structure of the cabinet was then covered with the technique of "lastronatura" in precious elm burl, which, thanks to the many natural veins always different, makes the dresser elegant, refined and unique. The exact term is Italian "lastronatura" untranslatable into English, in fact, "lastronatura" is very different and older than wood veneer. The slab is a craft technique that spread during the sixteenth century and remained unchanged until the mid-nineteenth century before the Industrial Revolution; consisted in cutting by hand with saws the trunks of trees of noble wood (walnut, mahogany, briar, feather, etc..) in many layers with a thickness ranging from 4 to 6 millimeters, which were then applied to the furniture for decorative purposes; the finishing of this process was very complex: the layer of wood was treated with natural earth dissolved in water for the desired tonality, it was antiqued with stone, it was fixed with shellac applied with a brush and finally the polishing was carried out in 12 passages with a cotton pad soaked in shellac, straw-colored oil with powder of pumice stone. The“lastronatura” should not be confused with veneering which is a modern process, in fact, the wood layer is cut by machine and the thickness is below 1 mm., while that of the “lastronatura”, as already mentioned, is from 4 to 6 mm. This technique has allowed us to enhance the colors and the flaming of the elm burl, giving our furniture a unique and exclusive elegance and refinement. The artisans who have worked on this piece of furniture have managed to create an extraordinary piece of furniture, refined and compelling, which by virtue of its extreme elegance and its soft romantic line, make it extremely versatile and easy to place in any environment. Measures width cm.105, depth cm.50, height cm.92. On the wooden structure, we have not decided to make any restoration because its superficial veiled patina and its small imperfections make it really seductive and fascinating and attest to the antiquity and authenticity. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
