About the Item
A Magnificent French Ormolu-Mounted Green Painted Chinoiserie Commode with Original Marble Top, 19th Century
An exceptional French ormolu-mounted commode, richly decorated in vibrant green polychrome with exquisite gilt Chinoiserie scenes, and retaining its original veined marble top. The rectangular form is finely proportioned, with three central drawers flanked by paneled doors, all beautifully painted with landscapes, pagodas, blossoming trees, birds, and figures in the Chinese taste. The central medallion and surrounding panels are enhanced with delicate floral garlands and highlighted by finely chased ormolu mounts, underscoring the luxurious craftsmanship.
The cabinet rests on tapered fluted legs adorned with gilt foliate capitals and sabots, balancing elegance with solidity. The contrast between the verdant ground, golden ornamentation, and the richly figured marble top captures the opulence and exoticism that defined 19th-century European fascination with Chinoiserie.
This commode is not only a practical storage piece but also a work of decorative art—an embodiment of refined taste and artistry that would elevate any interior, from classical to contemporary. Its exceptional state of preservation, especially with the original marble top, makes it a rare and highly desirable example of 19th-century French furniture.

An exquisite French Ormolu-mounted mahogany and glass vitrine cabinet, attributed to Francois Linke, circa 1880.
Although unsigned, the jewel-like quality ormolu bronze mounts throughout, especially the corinthian columns, and the best mahogany and craftsmanship of the period, confirms our attribution to Francois Linke, who was almost certainly one of best furniture makers of the Belle Epoque period alongside Paul Sormani, Henry Dasson, Alexandre Chevrie...
