“Marie-Antoinette” chest of drawers in Mahogany, after G.Benneman and J.Stöckel

About the Item

This ceremonial chest of drawers is based on a cabinetmaking work by Guillaume Benneman (1750-1811) and Joseph Stöckel (1743-1802). This perfectly executed piece of furniture was originally commissioned by Marie-Antoinette to the two cabinetmakers. This chest of drawers opens with two doors lavishly ornamented with gilded bronze scrollwork, friezes, and acanthus leaves. The central mascaron faithfully reproduces a scene by the sculptor Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738-1814). These doors feature an original offset lock and key. The interior offers four identical spaces. The apron conceals three drawers decorated with interlacing and highlighted with bronze rods. The central drawer features a bronze lion's mouth as an entrance. The projecting front and rear uprights, adorned with falling acanthus and asparagus leaves, end in spinning top feet, further adorned with collars and large palmette sabots. The sides are crafted in the same style with mascarons depicting scenes. The entire piece is topped with thick Carrara marble that follows the lines of the piece and is bordered by a frieze of ovals. The many hours of work required for this creation, both for the ornamentation and the structure, reveal a breathtaking result where mastery and artistry have combined to create this Marie-Antoinette commode. ******** Period: Early 20th century Excellent condition.
