About the Item

A French Neoclassical carved wood commode with marble top and brass trim, from the early 19th century. This antique chest from France features a rectangular-shaped top with pronounced and rounded corners, atop a traditional neoclassical case that houses three full sized drawers, flanked within rounded and fluted front side posts. Each of the drawers is outlined in brass trim, and fitted with Neoclassical style ring pulls and escutcheons in a wreath and tied-bow motif (hardware is older but not likely original). Real brass trim continues across the front side posts and across the upper section of each shorter side, to add further embellishment. The chest is presented upon four legs, with front pair being conical and terminating into brass feet, and rear being more squared. The marble top (which is a later addition) is a darker salmon and coral color. This French Neoclassic period chest, with marble top and brass trimmings, would work really well in a bedroom as a dresser, or perhaps in a foyer or living area with decorative items atop and storage within.

Located in Atlanta, GA
A French Neoclassical commode, with marble top and exquisite brass accents, from the 19th century. This antique chest from France features a rectangular-shaped gray marble top, over case which houses four drawers (upper drawer is disguised within the top frieze), flanked within a pair of rounded column style front side posts, a straight skirt, and presented upon rounded front feet and block style feet at rear. Beautiful brass accents adorn the chest all down its front facade; from the foliate embellishments across the top and again at the bottom of the legs, the nicely decorated knob pulls and escutcheons on the drawer fronts, and finally the wrapped banding on the top and bottom of the columns. The marble is a medium gray with lighter and darker veining, which is a lovely contrast against the gorgeous fruitwood. Note that there are some scratches to the marble top which can be seen in the additional images. This 19th century French Neoclassical commode...
