About the Item

Beautiful historic NYC Chest of Drawers by the renowned New York cabinet maker and biographer to Duncan Phyfe Ernest F. Hagen. Hagen signed this chest of drawers in several places and then wrote in pencil on the underside of the top left drawer the following: Ernest F. Hagen Furniture and Antiques Sold to Mr. P. A. Rolling 28 East 78th Street NY March 16th 1902 Lot 1051 Ernest Hagen was Duncan Phyfe's most important biographer. If it hadn't been for the interest that he took in Phyfe in the latter part of the 19th century, while Phyfe was still alive, we may not know as much about this iconic cabinet-maker as we do today. Hagen's workshop was well-known for its cabinetry in the style of Duncan Phyfe. His work is stamped "Ernest F. Hagen" and, as in this case, we know who this particular chest of drawers was going to and where. The purchaser, Philip Ashton Rollins was as collector of rare documents, manuscripts, books and journals of early western Americana. His home, a Stafford and White mansion, was built in 1899, about the time of the purchase, and still stands today at that address. 45.5" wide x 22.25" deep x 47" high. "Ernest F. Hagen, Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer and Dealer in Antique Furniture, No. 213 E. Twenty-six Street- is unexcelled by any in the same business in the city for his skill and originality. This business was established as far back as 1845 by Krieg & Dohfmann, at No. 106 Norfolk Street, with whom Mr. Hagen searved his apprenticeship. About thirty five years ago this firm sold out to Meier and Hagen. In 1887 Mr. Hagen bought out his partner’s interest in the concern and has ever since carried on the business as sole proprietor. Mr. Hagen is a thorough master of every detail of his business, and by producing only strictly first class work at moderate prices he has succeeded in building up a large and flourishing trade. At his spacious and well-appointed store will be found a large assortment of antique furniture of which Mr. Hagen makes especially, handsomely carved and superbly finished, elegant cabinets, beautiful bookcases, chiffoniers, wardrobes, desks, etc., while furniture is made and upholstered to order in new and original designs in the highest style of art and at short notice." Antique Empire/ Biedermeier Chest of Drawers in West Indies Mahogany, Denmark

A beautiful Danish Empire or Biedermeier chest in fine West Indies mahogany with four drawers of staggered heights. The handsome figuring of the grain is given added movement by the flat cut contiguous veneer moving horizontally across the front of the chest.. The sides also have a flat cut veneer in one piece that was at the intersection of the huge branch or fork in the tree showing the knot and the concentric circles of the grain radiating out from the knot. Chest offers a pedestal top and rests on turned front feet, with diamond-shaped inlaid satinwood key insets. The top and bottom drawers have sculpted fronts. The secondary wood is pine as is traditional in Scandinavian cabinetry. Denmark, circa 1830. Note: You should always request a shipping quote.
