Oak 18th Century Bachelors Chest of Drawers

About the Item

A Charming mid 18th century, English, oak bachelors chest of four long drawers, the top drawer fitted with slides and compartments, retaining original brass handles throughout and raised on original shaped bracket feet. It is certainly quite unusual to find such a formal design of antique chest of drawers constructed using Oak, but we think this adds a real charm to the piece and actually makes it more unusual and particularly rare compared to most of it’s mahogany counterparts. Our best guess is that it was constructed by a relatively well skilled provincial craftsmen who had perhaps visited workshops in London, or Lancaster, and got a taste for the more formal town design, but when he returned home only had oak timber available to him for use in the construction. Whatever it’s origins it is certainly a functional little chest of drawers, that has a real elegance and has good quality of construction. The oak timber retains a great warmth and patina and it is a lovely extra touch that it has managed to retain its original handles & feet. There is part of the backplate missing on one of the escutcheons and one of the handles, but this has been missing a very long while and doesn't affect function, or aesthetics in the slightest. As with all items which we offer for sale this has been attended to in our workshops, where it has received a once over and natural wax polish in the traditional fashion by our highly trained antique furniture restorers, ensuring it is ready for immediate placement in the home, or office.  Circa 1750.
