About the Item

A good quality pair of late 19th century solid mahogany collector’s or specimen chests with trade label for ‘David Souttar of Aberdeen’. Each with a moulded top above five finely dovetailed drawers with original ornate brass handles and escutcheons and fitted with working ‘secure lever’ locks, standing on a plinth base with shaped front. In good condition with good color and grain, with minor marks consistent with age, the drawers open and close smoothly, one chest has a very small chip and watermark which we will take out/disguise, the other is slightly lighter from the sun. These could also be useful for filing purposes. The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately Width 19 ¼in (49 cm) Depth 16 ?in (41.5 cm) Height 45in (114 cm) Internal sizes of the drawers: 15 ¼ in wide x 14 ?in deep (38.7 cm x 36 cm) Heights graduated from 5 ¼in to 7 ¼in high (13.5 cm to 18 cm) Note: David Souttar, Cabinetmaker & Upholsterer, is recorded in the 1899-1900 Aberdeen Post Office Directory at 183 Rosemount Place and 28 Watson Street, Aberdeen.

An outstanding George III Scottish flame mahogany stage-back sideboard with original knife boxes and dating to circa 1800, probably Edinburgh.
