About the Item

A gorgeous and extremely rare 19th Century tall flame mahogany chest of 7 drawers in lovely condition. Likely hailing from early Victorian England, circa 1840, as well as being stunning and excellently crafted, this exceptional chest of drawers has a wealth of wonderfully attractive features and is particularly rare as it’s an especially tall single-piece chest which is not overly deep, making it much more versatile than others of its kind. Extremely impressive, gorgeously toned and wonderfully practical, it will add refined, bygone Country House grandeur to any interior. Very impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, it has substantial solid mahogany top and sides and robust, oak-lined drawers, showing the attention to detail and fine quality of its craftsmanship. It features seven beautiful oak-lined flame mahogany-veneered drawers with working brass locks and a key, a beautiful mahogany figured top, mahogany panelled sides and shapely turned feet. Two stunning and extremely rare standout features, which juxtapose beautifully against the rich flame mahogany grain and colouring, are the complete set of fabulous original two-tone ebonised drawer knobs with central intricately patterned Mother of Pearl inlays, as well as the highly attractive raised drawer borders, which sit pronounced from the chest front to catch the eye and really set this gorgeous piece apart. The statuesque, minimalist design and use of highlighting hues demonstrates the considerable influence the Biedermeier design movement, which was sweeping through Scandinavia and Continental Europe at this time, would have had in the crafting of this rare British beauty. All in all this is an exceptional and exceedingly rare (we’ve never seen another like it) early Victorian mahogany chest of drawers, which won’t fail to impress and wouldn’t look out of place in even the grandest of settings. CONDITION This is in good-to-very-good antique condition. Structurally sound, incredibly sturdy and beautifully crafted to last, there is one key which locks all the drawers. It has to-be-expected minor marks and bumps to show its almost 200-year age, including minor nicks and wear to the mahogany veneered drawer fronts, which have been touched-up over the years, but are hardly noticeable out of direct sunlight and which blend in with the lovely grain patterning. Overall it's an exceptional, wonderfully attractive and extremely rare piece in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should be just as stunning and even more rare in many generations to come – please see the photos.

Regency Davenport Desk Flame Mahogany 1830s Georgian Freemans Fine Country House
By William Freeman, Jeremiah and William Freeman
Located in London, GB
A beautiful, special and very rare flame mahogany Georgian Davenport in wonderful condition. Made by heralded furniture makers Freemans of Norwich, most likely in the 1830s, this fabulous and very much still highly usable Davenport will add superb quality, beautiful colour and bygone sophistication to any interior. Beautifully crafted from flame mahogany, this Davenport is extremely solid and reassuringly heavy. It features a sliding locking desktop ideal for storing a laptop and papers, four large locking drawers to the left side with dummy drawers to the right and a pull-out inkwell drawer complete with ink bottle. A beautiful and extremely rare feature are the pair of concealed slide-out candle holder ledges, much-needed for late-night 19th Century letter writing – this is the only Davenport we know of to have these. The sloping desk is adorned with the original racing green leather centrepiece with gold embellishments and has a bordered flat upper ledge. The front is decorated with four beautiful Corinthian carvings, most likely by William Freeman snr, who was renowned for his superb carving work. It has an impressive and imposing, shapely, Romanesque base and is set on attractive gadroon-mounted wheels for ease of movement. The drawers and dummy drawers have beautiful handles and brass-fronted locks and inside the desk are two opening upper drawers and two lower dummy drawers (where the inkwell slides behind). It has the Freemans stencil to the underside of one the drawers and has pencil marks underneath the base which appears to read “Palmer SC23”, which we haven’t been able to definitively trace but might indicate that it was built for General Charles Palmer, MP for Bath in the early 19th Century, who was married in 1823. Freemans of Norwich were a family of celebrated furniture makers based in the city around the first half of the 19th Century – father William and sons...
