Regency Style "the Commodious Chest" by Theodore Alexander for Althorp

About the Item

This very fine reproduction after the original in Althorp was designed by Theodore Alexander in the Althorp Living Home collection and is called “the Commodious Chest”. An exquisitely crafted work, the marquetry throughout is of the highest quality, having wonderful contrasting bands of ebony against the rosewood and amboyna veneers over oak secondary woods. The top is framed in a thick molded brass, the surface perfectly cast and free of pitting. Rather atypical for reproductions of the late 20th century, the bronze and brass work on this chest is actually very good - each of the mounts is a detailed work: the lion’s masks holding the draped acanthus garland pulls, the intricate Regency escutcheons, the repeated acanthus motif framing each drawer or most noteworthy the gorgeous acanthus mounts on the bracket feet. The original Régence commode, circa 1720 was purchased by the 5th Earl Spencer, known as 'The Red Earl', from the London firm of Edwards & Roberts in 1865 for £9. Edwards & Roberts of 21 Wardour Street were founded in 1845 and had expanded their premises to over a dozen buildings. This fashionable firm manufactured furniture but also retailed contemporary and fine antique furniture. The distinctive form of this chest is found predominantly in the Louis XIV and Regence period and was often used by André-Charles Boulle (1642-1723) for his intricately inlaid pieces. The commode can be stylistically attributed to the Parisian marchand-ebéniste cabinetmaker Nicolas Sageot (1666-1731). A very fine piece that remains in nearly the same condition it was when the chest left the showroom, it is a work that was crafted to last the test of time. Retail pricing for the chest ranges from $7,000-$9,000 depending on the retail store, this example being offered at a significant discount. Measurements: 52” W x 20” D x 36” H. Condition Report: Excellent condition with minor age appropriate wear, a few white marks from touching the wall, very small nicks.
