Small Antique Whitewashed Dutch Bombe Commode, Circa 1780

About the Item

A very unique small chest of drawers, hand-carved in the Netherlands, circa 1780, the wood has been whitewashed at some point over the last 250 years, resulting in an ashen white color with hints of cream and beige. The shapely commode has a bombe front comprised of three tiers of drawers and curvaceous front legs that extend well beyond the rectilinear sides. Two small iron pulls grace the front of each drawer, with the middle drawer being constructed in a concave manner, as opposed to the other two which slope outwards. The top has a thin recessed quarter-round edge and a double arbalete front, both of which hang over the main body by quite a bit. An ogee bracket comprises each of the two back feet, while the front pair are robust paw feet flanking a highly sinuous apron. The color and shape of our Dutch bombe commode allow it to mesh quite well with numerous interior design styles. It can be placed in any bedroom as a one-of-a-kind and graceful storage piece.

  • Circa 1870 Bleached Walnut Renaissance Style Commode from Florence, Italy
    Located in Dallas, TX
This majestic, bleached walnut commode was hand-carved by an Italian master in Florence, circa 1870. The details of the floral rinceaux, which are dotted with high relief mascarons are of the highest craftsmanship, beautifully eliciting the Renaissance style. Each of the three full-length drawers has a cabochon coat of arms with large foliate whorls emanating from behind it. The two coils next to the central cartouche have floral centers, while the following volutes are adorned with mascaron pulls, each drawer with a different pair of faces. An overhanging top with quarter round molding sits over a crenellated border, which has a pair of small drawers beneath separated by a large lion mascaron. Both drawers have mascaron pulls set inside an acanthus rinceau. All drawers are flanked by tall vertical pilasters, embellished with a curled acanthus margent punctuated with a mascaron, diminishing roundels, fruits, and linenfold. A shaped shield with a large grotesque is inset on each side and surrounded by thin quarter round molding. The impressive commode is supported by four monopodial lion paw feet beneath a border of infilled gadroon lobes. The walnut wood has been stripped, giving the chest of drawers a warm golden cream color. Our Renaissance style Florentine commode...

  • Circa 1820 French Restauration Commode in Flame Mahogany, Gilt Bronze Hardware
    Located in Dallas, TX
Topped by a one-inch thick marble top, this commode has a beautiful mahogany veneer with flame graining and foliate and floral gilt bronze hardware. Hand-carved in France, circa 1820, the stunning chest of drawers is from the Restauration period, which is the transitional era of French history following the first defeat of Napoleon. The gray marble top with white and black veining has a subtle embellishment often seen during the Restauration: rounded front corners. Directly underneath is a drawer with flared tulip molding (molding of Restauration furniture is almost always thin and delicate), with an elaborate rinceaux mount, adorned with a shell, palmettes, and a supple floral swag drop handle. The drawer is segmented into four compartments, allowing the storage of smaller items. Three tiers of taller drawers form the main body, each embellished with a volute leaf keyplate flanked by a pair of swag drop pulls. The apron is also adorned with a lovely bronze mount of a foliate margent with a center rosette that spans between a pair of half-bun feet in the front (the two back feet are blocked). A beautiful example of Restauration period furniture...
