Soap Hollow Chest of Drawers
About the Item
Soap Hollow is located in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and was given its name because of the area's soft-soap industry. Five known Amish-Mennonite men are associated with the making of Soap Hollow furniture: John Sala, the Patriarch; Jeremiah Stahl; Peter K. Thomas; Christian C. Blouch; and Tobias Livingston. These fine pieces of painted furniture are usually stencil decorated, often including the maker's name and date of manufacture. "Manufactured by [maker's name]" is often stenciled on the front of pieces, testimony to the artist's pride. Many pieces have the initials of the owner for whom the piece was made. The shapes of crests, backsplashes, aprons, and cornices are unmistakable characteristics associated with this group of furniture, as is the dominant use of the color red. The finished pieces were often embellished with bright white porcelain pulls.
