Transitional Commode (Louis XV – Louis XVI), Marquetry, Late 18th Century

About the Item

Transitional Commode (Louis XV – Louis XVI), Marquetry, Late 18th Century Elegant and refined, this Transitional commode — bridging the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles — dates from the late 18th century. It was crafted in Paris, specifically in the renowned Faubourg Saint-Antoine, a historical hub of French cabinetry, known for its exceptional artisans and prestigious institutions such as the École Boulle. This commode was acquired from a Parisian apartment located near the Eiffel Tower. It had been in the same family for several generations, lovingly passed down over time — which explains its remarkable state of preservation. The piece features two dovetail drawers, ensuring outstanding durability and craftsmanship. The drawers are fitted with finely chiseled bronze drop handles, while the locks are both protected and adorned with decorative bronze mounts. The metalwork, detailed and elegant, reveals the bronzier’s creativity and precision. The key is later than the piece itself. The lower crosspiece is gracefully contoured (with alternating inward and outward curves) and decorated with a bronze appliqué. The corners of the commode are cut with “pans coupés,” a typical feature of the Transitional style, adding lightness and sophistication. This is a beautiful example of decorative marquetry. The cabinetmaker skillfully assembled various woods — including violet wood and rosewood — to create refined, delicate patterns on the drawer fronts and sides. A Greek key frieze outlines the panels, with a subtle green-tinted background that enhances the piece’s uniqueness. The top is a luminous white marble, subtly veined and expertly shaped to follow the contours of the furniture — a refined and timeless finish. The back is constructed of solid wood panels, ensuring strength and longevity. The commode stands on four curved, sheathed Louis XV-style legs, finished with elegant brass clogs. Crafted with high-quality materials and traditional joinery (tenon and mortise), this piece demonstrates exceptional workmanship. The interior has been thoroughly cleaned to ensure a healthy, odor-free environment for storage. Thanks to its balanced proportions and classic charm, this commode integrates effortlessly into a contemporary setting. It brings warmth, authenticity, and elegance — inviting a lasting, personal connection. A true masterpiece of craftsmanship, this complex piece required the skills of multiple highly trained artisans, embodying the very best of the French decorative arts tradition.
