About the Item

Crafted near the base of the French Alps, circa 1850, this veneered chiffonier hails from the former province of Le Dauphiné. During the reign of Napoleon III (known as “The Second Empire”, roughly 1848-1871), the region experienced significant industrial development and became an important center for luxury household goods. A chiffonier is a tall and narrow commode with more than three drawers, first seen in mid-18th century bedrooms and living rooms of women of high society. Examples from The Second Empire, such as our six drawer chiffonier (which has been assembled with dovetail joineries), were often veneered with elaborate marquetry designs. Each drawer front has a geometric pattern with an elongated oval inset among a segmented rectangular. In the center of the marquetry is a bronze drop handle with floral and foliate mounts and a pair of small, scalloped shells. A scrolled leaf keyplate, also in bronze, sits above each handle, fronting the drawer’s functional lock. Similar floral and foliate bronze can be seen flanking the upper drawer, with a scrolled corbel above a scalloped leaf and floral margent. The apron features a pair of high arches flanking a down swinging curve that is adorned with another bronze embellishment, this time a Rococo-inspired cabochon flanked by pierced leaves. Our Le Dauphine chiffonier has hues of honey and brown, giving it a beautiful and warm appearance. An equally gorgeous one inch thick marble with subtle bombe shape and recessed quarter round molding tops the six drawers. The stone is mainly rouge with cream, ochre, and brown inclusions, with traces of small fossils. A perfect chest of drawers for any bedroom, boudoir, or living room.

Louis XIV Cherrywood Commode from France, Early 18th Century
Located in Dallas, TX
The straight grain and rich color of the cherry tree made it a desirable wood for constructing luxury furniture during the 18th century. One beautiful example is our period Louis XIV commode, which was hand-carved in France in the early 1700’s. Augmenting the lovely reddish-brown color of the commode is an arbalete top that slightly hangs over the three stacked drawers below. Each drawer has three bronze foliate fittings set inside geometric panels with recessed molding (two pierced foliate swag pulls flanking a small keyplate surrounded by a parted leaf). There is a unique, shallow pullout drawer with two concentric circle pulls built into the molded frieze. This drawer was most likely used to store jewelry and other small valuables. Canted corners can be seen along the front of the shaped top, with elongated asymmetrical panels beneath that flank the tiers of drawers...

Circa 1820 French Restauration Commode in Flame Mahogany, Gilt Bronze Hardware
Located in Dallas, TX
Topped by a one-inch thick marble top, this commode has a beautiful mahogany veneer with flame graining and foliate and floral gilt bronze hardware. Hand-carved in France, circa 1820, the stunning chest of drawers is from the Restauration period, which is the transitional era of French history following the first defeat of Napoleon. The gray marble top with white and black veining has a subtle embellishment often seen during the Restauration: rounded front corners. Directly underneath is a drawer with flared tulip molding (molding of Restauration furniture is almost always thin and delicate), with an elaborate rinceaux mount, adorned with a shell, palmettes, and a supple floral swag drop handle. The drawer is segmented into four compartments, allowing the storage of smaller items. Three tiers of taller drawers form the main body, each embellished with a volute leaf keyplate flanked by a pair of swag drop pulls. The apron is also adorned with a lovely bronze mount of a foliate margent with a center rosette that spans between a pair of half-bun feet in the front (the two back feet are blocked). A beautiful example of Restauration period furniture...
