A fine French Provincial Louis XV style chest of drawers commode, early 20th century, having a serpentine shaped wooden top with molded edge, over conforming high quality solid wood case fitted with three drawers, each with dovetail joinery, ornate scrolling brass pulls, and floral carvings, flanked rounded corners and paneled sides, scalloped apron with foliate shell reliefs, rising on acanthus leaf carved knee low cabriole legs ending in whorl feet. A stunning French Provincial crème painted chest of drawers commode with beautifully aged original patina and interesting provenance! Exquisitely hand-crafted in France in the late 18th / early 19th century, exceptionally executed in elegant, sophisticated and luxurious King Louis 15th taste, topped with the original rouge red Pyrenees marble top with striking white veining, serpentine-shaped front and molded edge, over a conforming solid wood case fitted with a secret hidden storage compartment and four dovetailed drawers, each with ornate gilt-bronze handles and escutcheons. When you remove the top left drawer, the center panel with faux escutcheon can slide over and reveal a concealed wooden drawer for valuables. Elegantly decorated, the drawer fronts and rounded corner posts adorned with subtle carvings, paneled sides, scalloped apron with hand carved Rocaille shell and scroll motif, rising on short cabriole legs. In the original cream paint finish with distressed chippy paint patina perfection! This gorgeous French Louis XV chest of drawers dates back to around 1770. It was made during the so called Transition period, the time between Louis XV and Louis XVI. It already shows the plain and stricter design of the Louis XVI period, but has still some playful marquetry decor details which draw from the more pompous Louis XV style. The three drawers commode stands on four cabriole legs with bronze sabots. Between the first and the second drawer is a decorated bronze band. This beautiful chest of drawers has its original wooden top with its veneer decor matching the decor of the front and sides. The Transition commode has been expertly refinished in our workshop.
