American Mid-Century Modern Walnut Tall Chest

About the Item

This beautiful and simple tall chest housing six large drawers was made in America in the late 1950s. Constructed of a dark rich walnut veneer chosen to highlight the long grains and growth patterns of the wood down the entire length of the chests front creating its most striking design element. The simple nicked pulls are understated and small set out at the far ends and low providing a beautiful plain of wood. The chest is raised on simple slightly canted legs adding to its verticality. Crafted and designed by Custom Design of Westchester Inc. located in Mamaroneck N. Y. The piece is so labeled with a small thin metal tag also including the company's address at the time. This firm has now be incorporated into a larger firm and runs under a different name to this day. An interesting construction detail is the long drawer depth running slot on each side of the drawer that corresponds to a male member built into the interior of the chest creating a longer-lasting support mechanism for smoother operation. The use of laminated woods, nickeled metal and sleek design all features used to great effect after the Second World War but introduced as manufacturing improvements during the war. The chest appears to retain is original finish.
