English George III Flame Mahogany Tall Chest on Chest of Drawers, circa 1780

This excellent example of English craftsmanship is noteworthy for its’ use of crotch-grain mahogany throughout the front of the case. The cut is magnificent and shows the eye of an artist, as each veneer was cut to create as much drama as the branch would allow and then arranged in a flow that zigs-and-zags across the graduated facade. Twists of grain flow from one drawer into the next in a loose match-booking that suggests all veneers were harvested from the same log. The drawers retain’ original brasses and cast brass escutcheons in the Rococo taste, the linings hand dovetailed with all pine secondary woods in the typical manner. Chamfered columns flank the upper portion of the chest, the lower corners remaining square over the squared bracket feet. These are original and untouched, each retaining the original corner blocking and nearly blackened oxidization. A small folding surface is easily withdrawn from the top of the lower portion of the chest. For the passionate collector of fine English furnishings, this is a particularly striking example. Its’ excellent original condition and exquisite timbers make it a firm strikepoint for any classical interior. Measurements: 43 1/4” W x 21 1/8” D x 75” H; writing area is 40 1/4” W x 13 3/8” D, 36 1/2” height from floor Condition report: Third drawer from top has loss to cockbead molding on left side; early surface with gorgeous patina, old cracks and minor losses here and there; loss of veneer in a few spots along edge of waist, these hidden by the molding around the waist. Original brasses, no key. Original feet. Additional images are available upon request.
