George I Walnut Bachelors Chest, circa 1720

$135,000

About

The discerning collector will find this museum quality bachelors chest quite appealing, with its unique and one of a kind drawer and cupboard configuration. This is from the Thomas Devenish Collection (documented see provenance). An important piece of furniture, the design of this bachelors chest is undoubtedly a precursor to the model used in the mid-18th century kneehole desk; the difference being, the middle section would have been designed with a recess allowing room for the feet and a writing surface above. This is a highly unusual and unique piece of Fine furniture displaying bright, strong, beautiful color, and form. The make up of the drawers and cupboards in front are not typical. There are several different size drawers, and a center cupboard housing more cupboards and drawers with secret additional concealed drawers and compartments. The top consists of rectangular quartered, figured, crossbanded, and feather banded walnut that opens up to a baize-lined surface, revealing a wainscot oak interior with a hidden well (see image). The removable tray conceals secret drawers (see images). The chest maintains it's original bracket feet and domed gilt-brass handles with rings. The condition is excellent with a mellow patina and original finish--an absolutely superb piece of furniture, and of the highest quality. Dimensions are: Height 52 3/4" Width 33 3/4" Depth 16 1/2" Provenance: Provenance: Lot #13 Sotheby's New York April 24, 2008 "Tom Devenish: The Collection" Sale "Highy Important English Furniture".
