About the Item

Louis XVI Period Inlaid Walnut Chest of Drawers, South Germany c.1785. The extraordinary pattern of inlay visible on the top, front and both sides of this three drawer chest is entirely neoclassical in nature. The attention to geometric precision in both the placement of the individual pieces of timber as well as the contrast both in colour and grain showcases the extremely high level of skill available to produce such a chest in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. The designer and artisans involved in creating this chest were quite aware of how the various grains of the walnut timber would appear in the available light generated by natural means at this point in time. The fact that the sides were lavished with the same level of detail as the top and front indicates that this chest was made for a wealthy household where the amount of fuel for the open fireplace as well as an abundance of candles placed around the interior generated an enormous amount of light necessary to clearly see the wonderful craftsmanship. All of the surfaces display an ingenious combination of light and dark, straight lines of grain versus the appealing swirl of burl walnut and shapes that emphasize the broad flat planes of the top, front and sides available for decoration. Interestingly the four legs upon which the chest stands as well as the horizontal banding that connects the four legs to the chest rely on sculptural carving for their presence and add a handsome contrast to the skilled inlay work seen on the chest itself. All three of the drawers open fully for maximum storage and lock with a key. The handsome brass hardware is original to the chest and has been freshly polished to complement the gleam of the polished finish.
