Late Regency 19th Century Burr Oak Miniature Chest
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A delightful Regency Period burr oak miniature chest having Superbly figured top above two short & three long drawers with Original brass knobs flanked by elegant fluted stiles raised on Original brass ball feet (Often much debate is had as to whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents, or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip during which the salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from. This particular miniature chest of drawers is probably the latter and would have been made as a sample piece. The construction is exquisite and the attention to tiny detail phenomenal in all honesty. They work that would have gone into constructing this with all of its fine details would actually have been more of a challenge and taken a more skilled craftsmen than its full size counterparts would have done. It is also super quality and unusual being constructed from burr oak which has taken on an exceptional rich colour and patina over the years of its life. A really quite charming piece of antique miniature furniture...

English Late 19th Century Walnut Chest Signed Waring and Gillow Paris
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
A handsome and most impressive English late 19th century walnut chest signed Waring and Gillow Paris. The five drawer chest is raised by striking ball and claw feet below elegant seashell reserves. The deep arbalest shaped apron displays a superb and most decorative central seashell design flanked by richly carved scrolled foliate movements. The five drawers showcase the stunning wood grain which continues over each drawer with richly chased foliate ormolu pulls. The sides each display exceptional butterfly veneered panels while the top displays a magnificent quarter veneered design also showcasing the stunning warm wood grain framed within a finely carved mottled foliate band at the border. Waring and Gillow was an acclaimed English furniture manufacturer formed in 1897 following the merger of "Gillows of Lancaster and London" and "Waring of Liverpool". Gillow & Co. was founded in 1730 and succeeded by the sons who later also established it in London. They rapidly established a reputation for supplying high-quality furniture to the richest families in the country as well as now being known for introducing the Davenport desk...

Extremely Rare Pair of Regency Cast-Iron Sarcophagus Shaped Strong Boxes
Located in Benington, Herts
An extremely rare pair of Regency cast-iron sarcophagus shaped strong boxes. Regency, circa 1820 Painted to simulate palisander wood and with parcel-gilt, the cavetto-moulded hinged lids cast with flower sprays above foliate-cast bands over front panels relieved with river gods within canted corners cast with standing muses, the sides with lion mask and ring handles over leafy aprons on massive lion’s paw feet; the Brahmah type lock stamped “T. Davis from London” and impressed with the Royal Crown. These extraordinary pieces are modelled on Regency wine coolers. The forms are classic Greco-Roman revival with the boat-hook handles, mythic figures and the overall sarcophagus pattern. You would struggle to find one let alone a pair. Good items for any collection. Research on going into these strong boxes but we have found possible information on the lock stamped Davis….(historyoflocks ) The relationship of King George III and George Davis of Windsor, who was locksmith in ordinary to His Majesty. Davis, in 1799, invented and patented a unique style of lock, which was also beautifully engraved with a warning not to make duplicate keys. Sensitive government secrets always demanded, then as today, locks that were state of the art. Davis locks ended up on government dispatch boxes...

Mahogany Double Wellington Chest
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality Late 19th Century Mahogany Double Wellington Chest With Two Banks Of Six Drawers With Replacement Brass Knobs Flanked By Hinged Locking Pilaster To Each Side Raised On Original Plinth Base. The first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, commissioned the first chest of this type, i.e. a tall bank of drawers secured by hinged locking pilasters to take with him and carry around various battlefields and that is where the name wellington chest comes from. It is now used to refer to almost any tall, narrow antique chest of drawers. By default this particular design of chest is therefore referred to as a double wellington chest. From around 1820 onwards they were manufactured in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, plus they varied a great deal in terms of both their quality and the wood which they are constructed from. This wellington chest is of a form rarely found in terms of its double bank of drawers...
