Early 18th Century Walnut Corner Cupboard

About the Item

An Extremely Attractive And Very Good Quality Early 18th Century, Queen Anne Period, Walnut Wall Hanging Corner Cupboard, Of Exceptional Untouched Colour And Patina, Having Elegant Fielded Panel Door, With Original Brasswear Enclosing Shaped Shelves. Corner cupboards, particularly hanging ones, are of course a great solution to a room which is lacking storage and already has full walls. This is of course due to the fact they can be mounted in the corner and add a decent amount more of functional storage to a space which wouldn’t be in use otherwise. They also of course add real elegance and a slightly different dimension. This is a great example, very early in terms of its date, dating from the Queen Anne period in fact and it has certainly survived in great condition. Clearly well cherished throughout its life, the many years of polishing, cleaning and day to day use has led to it retaining a quite glorious colour and patina that is simply impossible to replicate. Overall the condition is extremely good, just a few old marks, scuffs, scatches and dents which are to be expected on a piece of furniture which has been well used and is over 300 years old. It also comes supplied with working lock and key. As with all items which we list for sale this queen anne corner cupboard has received a natural wax polish by our traditional antique furniture restorers before being advertised for sale. Circa 1710. Height 38.5in. Width 25.5in. (This measurement is across the front of the cupboard) Depth 18.25in. (This measurement is how far along a wall from the corner the cupboard would protrude)

Early-18th Century Red Japanned Corner Cabinet Cupboard
Located in Lymington, GB
An English early-eighteenth century red japanned bow-front corner cupboard, or cabinet, George II-period, circa 1730. In superb condition throughout. Retaining its original butterfly hinges, with a period key and working lock. These are usually encountered with a black background, however when in red these examples of japanning are much sought after. Many were produced domestically, often by talented female members of the family. Note the charming English interpretations in the decorated surfaces. An unusual subject can be seen in the base, a hunter on horseback with sword drawn, confronting a mythological beast, probably representing a tiger with mandarins posing amongst stylised pagodas, rooftops and rockwork. Chinoiserie-decorated surfaces were extremely popular in the early part of the 18th century, almost reaching a craze among the upper classes wishing to demonstrate their fashionable status. There were several revivals of chinoiserie particularly in the first quarter of the 20th century, so caution is advised in one’s collecting. This type of decoration is also sometimes erroneously referred to as ''lacquer’'. The fashion icon Coco Chanel furnished her exquisite Paris apartments largely in the European chinoiserie taste.
