About the Item

This late Georgian pine corner cupboard, more than 200 years old, bears all the hallmarks of a piece of architectural detail from a circa 1815 house of a wealthy Virginian of the era. It was long ago converted into a piece of free-standing furniture. The broken pediment crown, the molding there and around upper and lower doors, an arched 15-pane upper door mimicking the central section of a Palladian window, and four stationary shaped shelves (3 in the upper section scored for displaying plates and 1 in the lower section) all speak to the work of a highly-skilled craftsman. Made of old growth Virginia pine from the state's primeval forests, it now has a French polish finish that is more than a century old -- both of which contribute to its mellow richness and patina. This cabinet can grace a prominent corner in any room, but you'll surely want to give it pride of place in a room frequented by your guests where you can display cherished objects. We can even imagine a buyer asking their architect to design a spot specifically to highlight it! (NOTE: Dimension shown for width is measured across the front, and depth is measured along each wall to the corner.)

Repaired: There are minor old repairs and replaced hardware. Some of the glass panes are original, while some are replacements. There are a few old age cracks, but nothing striking. Additions or alterations made to the original: It was probably originally a painted built-in, but salvaged in the early 20th Century when the house it was from was demolished . Worth saving, it was stripped, refinished, and minor modifications made to the feet to support a freestanding cabinet. Wear consistent with age and use. Comes into 2 pieces for easy moving.
