18th Century Louis XIII Style Italian Walnut Credenza / Buffet
About the Item
Credenza hand-crafted in Italy in the late 1700s in the Louis XII style using walnut. The credenza has a beautiful patina and color and the placement of the molding give it a lot of depth and details. The credenza shows a one over two design, with a single, large, inlaid drawer on top of two doors. The drawer and door fronts are decorated with an applied piece of molding (placed also on the sides), and while the doors are also framed with angular molding, this element is missing on the drawer. On the front edges of the case the piece is decorated with a column-like element obtained by placing vertical flat molding. The credenza sits on the original, hand-carved bracket feet. The top featured a single, thick walnut board with flat edges.
Overall this is a beautiful, smaller storage piece that shows typical Italian lines and decorative elements. The color of the wood is warm and deep, and the placement of the molding and brass highlights provide movement and depth on a piece that is pretty straight-lined. This credenza would look great in a dining room, but also in an entryway or hallway.

18th Century Bleached Walnut Italian Credenza, Buffet, Sideboard
Located in Carmine, TX
Walnut credenza handcrafted in Italy in the mid 1700s and bleached recently. Don't let its delicate overall appearance fool you because, as my lower back can attest, this baby is heavy. This is a beautiful credenza that follow the typical italian style with slanted sides, which create small triangular storage spaces on either sides of the two main front doors and drawer. Overall the credenza is very straight in lines. The drawers have flat overlay fronts, and the doors show chamfered panels with a raised carving and are framed by flat molding. The carving and molding help giving the piece some depth and decoration. The bleaching process also provided the credenza with additional warmth, depth and decoration, by bringing out the beautiful grain and underlying colors of the wood. The top of the credenza is composed of boards with ogee edge nailed to the main case. On the inside the credenza is very spacious, providing plenty of storage space.
Overall this is a beautiful piece that has lived a long life, and has received some help in "hanging in there" over the years. This is a piece that will fit well with both modern and...
