18th Century Tuscan Painted Credenza

About the Item

Stipo / Credenza hand-made in Italy in the mid 1700s using walnut and pegged construction. The credenza is very simple and belongs to the Italian pieces considered of “Arte povera”, in other words, piece that were made and used by common people in their homes and farm homes. The stipo (cabinet) features two doors still help by the original hinges and is divided internally by two shelves. The inside is very spacious and will provide plenty of storage. The top is made of multiple boards with ogee edges. The baseboard is a simple piece of hand-carved molding sitting on hand-carved block feet and scalloped molding. Overall this is a really cute, small but spacious cabinet that will bring a splash of color wherever it is placed.

18th Century Bleached Walnut Italian Credenza, Buffet, Sideboard
Located in Carmine, TX
Walnut credenza handcrafted in Italy in the mid 1700s and bleached recently. Don't let its delicate overall appearance fool you because, as my lower back can attest, this baby is heavy. This is a beautiful credenza that follow the typical italian style with slanted sides, which create small triangular storage spaces on either sides of the two main front doors and drawer. Overall the credenza is very straight in lines. The drawers have flat overlay fronts, and the doors show chamfered panels with a raised carving and are framed by flat molding. The carving and molding help giving the piece some depth and decoration. The bleaching process also provided the credenza with additional warmth, depth and decoration, by bringing out the beautiful grain and underlying colors of the wood. The top of the credenza is composed of boards with ogee edge nailed to the main case. On the inside the credenza is very spacious, providing plenty of storage space. Overall this is a beautiful piece that has lived a long life, and has received some help in "hanging in there" over the years. This is a piece that will fit well with both modern and...

The drawers show beautiful hand-made dovetailed joints and the back itself is a work of art. The buffet is still sitting on its original carved feet and shows a scalloped and carved apron, and is finished with simple, original hardware. This piece was hand-selected because of its beautiful proportions, carvings and overall color. The bleaching process shows much of the natural grain of the wood but it also highlights the human-made carvings, creating a beautiful combination of natural and human designs...
