Blackened, Gilt Steel, Bronze Double Cantilevered Console by Gary Magakis, USA, 2013
Like wings, a central two door cabinet in blackened steel anchors three floating cantilevered cabinets radiating from both sides of the grounded central unit. The artful arrangement of these boxes, which literally float off the ground, belies their solid steel and bronze construction. Edges on all sides taper gracefully and narrow slightly creating a lightness in this sculpted metal console. The anchor cabinet flows at once from blackened and incised steel to a floating gilded steel box and then to a second blackened steel cabinet; on the other side floats an incised bronze two-door cabinet. The whole console is finished on all sides, able to sit as a center piece or room divider. Every angle has be considered by the artist – from the top down and all the way around this is a geometric masterpiece of form and function in sculpted metal.
