Brutalist Credenza Sideboard William Westenhaver Witco

About the Item

A fantastic Brutalist Credenza Sideboard by William Westenhaver for Witco. Carved wooden panels with great depth and detail decorate the entire body of this sideboard. The front has two cabinets doors that open to drawers on the top and cabinet storage beneath. The center panels do not open but the storage is continued behind them inside the credenza. Large abstract carvings flowing with large round carved handles for the cabinet doors. The carving is amazing with such depth that you can see the grain throughout like looking at stacked or layered wood. William Westenhaver one of the founders of Witco (Western International Trading Co) is well know for his tropical Polynesian Tiki style of the mid century period 1958-70. Much of his work also falls into the Brutalist style of the period as well. Brutalist a style in art and especially architecture using exaggeration and distortion to create its effect. This is a familiar theme in many of Witco's pieces. This sideboard is solid, heavy and in good condition, some surface ware to the top, nicks and dings to the lower frame being the legs. In very good vintage condition, with sings of age and use.
