Awa Kōpaka means glacier in te reo Māori. The Awa Kōpaka credenza was inspired by our observations of the organic forms of the glaciers on the West Coast of New Zealand. The credenza was designed by Richard Simpson during a three-day road trip down the West Coast, as we explored the Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers. Standing at the face of the glaciers we could see this enormous fissure of ice and we could hear it cracking & moving. You could see where it was carved out and the beautiful organic forms on the ice itself. Awa Kōpaka is expressing that form into a functional cabinet. It is a narrative about the movement of ice and how it continues to shape the landscape of New Zealand.
