About the Item
Gorgeous vintage Hollywood Regency Art Deco credenza or dresser by Renzo Rutili for Johnson Furniture comprised of an off-white painted top, ends & front of door frames; white gold embossed leather door panels; faux marbleized lacquered drawer fronts, interior spaces, shelf, & even the backs of the doors; plus, brass, and brass plated details and hardware. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. We have sanded and freshly painted the top, ends, and front door panels. And, we have reconditioned the leather although it still retains its wonderful vintage patina with nicks & scratches. The marbleized lacquer we have left in its original condition which has normal wear for age. The brass trim has lots of distressing and age patina and we have chosen to leave it alone. The hardware has been cleaned and lacquered. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century.
WOW!!! Check out this ridiculously fabulous credenza by Renzo Rutili!!! We have a GORGEOUS vintage credenza or dresser by famed designer Renzo Rutili for Johnson Furniture for your viewing pleasure!! It features four front doors with cinched rectangular white leather center panels with narrow horizontal gold stripes and is framed with gilded wood trim and square brass hardware with drop handles. The back of the doors is faux marbleized lacquer as is the shelf behind the door on the far right and all drawer fronts. The two outside doors are hinged and swing open and the two inside doors slide over the outside doors and reveal four large marbleized drawers with brass circular handles in the center of the cabinet. Hidden behind the far-left door are four additional marbleized drawers; three larger with brass plated square pulls and one smaller drawer above. It has lovely brass trim under the top of the cabinet, around the base, and it stands on beautiful brass cone shaped legs with square bases. The brass is unpolished and has a natural beautifully aged patina with some dings and wear as to be expected with vintage pieces. We chose to leave it alone as we appreciate the beauty and character it adds to the credenza. The leather is also aged in some places, and we have polished a few of the marks and dings but again, we love it the way it is! It is Hollywood Regency and a bit Art Deco in style, and it is going to be marvelous whether striking a pose in your dining room, family room, or study. Place it under a large mirror in the entry or adorn it with artwork, a sculpture, pair of lamps, or use it in your bedroom as a dresser. It is versatile, has tons of adequate storage space, and an impeccable style sure to make a bold statement in your home!
Lorenzo (Renzo) Rutili was born in 1901 in Donora, Pennsylvania. He was a designer for Johnson Furniture for over 30 years and then Tomlinson of High Point, North Carolina for three years following his time with Johnson. He studied at Carnegie Institute, and he also studied design in Europe for several years. He was a salesman, a designer, a lecturer, and past president of Grand Rapids Furniture Designers Association in 1940. Mr. Rutili passed away May 26, 1966.
Johnson Furniture was founded in 1903 by three brothers who emigrated from Sweden in 1887: Carl, Hjalmar, and Axel. Carl had received a medal from the King of Sweden for his cabinetmaking. They hired Tom Handley as the in-house designer in 1908 and also became an officer for them in 1922 and was with the company until his death in 1926. He established Johnson – Handley – Johnson as a companion company and both entities as major producers of high quality, period revival, residential furniture. Johnson produced wood residential furniture for the bedroom, while the Johnson- Handley- Johnson label was used for dining suites, occasional tables, and case pieces. Designer David Robinson led Johnson into the production of Art Deco and Modern lines in 1928. The company claimed that they were the first to produce a complete line of Modern furniture in the United States. Lorenzo (Renzo) Rutili served as head of design from 1933 into the 60’s. He personally designed groups in Modern and Neoclassical repertoires and oversaw contracted design lines by famous designers including D. Robertson Smith, Paul Frankl, Eliel Saarinen, and J. Robert F. and Pipsam Swanson. In 1963 the last family member Earl Johnson retired, and the company merged with Timber-Line Inc, while still retaining the Johnson name. In 1968 until 1975 the company was owned by Holiday Inns, Inc. and in 1983 it sold to Rose Manufacturing.

MCM 2-Piece China Hutch Cabinet Buffet by Heywood Wakefield Contessa Collection
By Heywood-Wakefield Co.
Located in Topeka, KS
Mid-Century Modern 2-piece china hutch, cabinet, or buffet by Heywood Wakefield for the Contessa Collection. Comprised of 2-pieces a top hutch & a bottom buffet in a dark cherrywood, woven wicker basket weave or caned door fronts, brass toned pulls, & slim steel legs. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are nicks on the left side of the buffet edge toward the front. Stiffener has been added underneath buffet as the cabinet had sagged in the middle making doors uneven. Stiffener corrected that issue. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1960’s.
In 1959, the Heywood Wakefield “Contessa” slogan was "Wood for warmth and grace ... steel for strength and rigidity." "Furniture of Slender Elegance." And does this China cabinet ever fit that description. The Contessa line features a darker cherrywood, gold or brass toned accents, and slim steel legs. This cabinet has 2 pieces. A bottom buffet that features brass toned pulls that open two sets of double doors. There are three drawers on the right side with a silverware tray in the top drawer. The left side is open storage. The top hutch features two rolling side doors with woven wicker basket weave, or caned, door fronts and three shelves in the center. The whole cabinet stands on slim steel legs and exudes mid-century modern magnificence! This awesome, versatile china cabinet or buffet will look amazing whether you place it in the dining room, living room, study, or the kitchen. It is adaptable enough to blend right in whether your design style leans to Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, industrial, southwestern, or modern country.
In 1897, two prominent furniture companies, Heywood Brothers and Wakefield Company merged and created Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company; the name would be shortened to Heywood-Wakefield in 1921. The new company rose to popularity in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s with its solid wood, Art Deco-inspired, mid-century modern furniture. In 1992, South Beach Furniture Company acquired the rights to the Heywood-Wakefield name. After realizing how in demand vintage Heywood Wakefield pieces were, production began on new pieces that remained true to the style, quality, and values of the original company. Today's Heywood-Wakefield is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the name and its famous pieces while incorporating new and contemporary technology which allows new generations to appreciate the classic looks from a classic company.

American of Martinsville Accord Walnut & Cane Dresser & Bachelor’s Chest w/ X’s
By Merton Gershun, American of Martinsville
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome pair of chests from American of Martinsville and Merton Gershun’s Accord line of furniture with the signature X’s and asymmetric handles. One is the long walnut dresser with three drawers and cane doors and the second is the three-drawer bachelor’s chest. Two separate pieces but butted together make one long marvelous piece. We are pricing them as a set. Both are in wonderful restored condition. However, they are not without signs of age and use having an overall beautiful age patina which includes small nicks, scratches, and imperfections but nothing major. Please see photos, circa mid-20th century.
Oh my! If you could ever say X marks the spot for a piece of furniture…you can say it with this pair. Note the metal signature crosses in their tops and their fabulous asymmetric or staggered handles. These gorgeous chests are from the Accord collection produced in the mid-20th century by American of Martinsville and designed by Merton Gershun. One piece is the longer dresser which is comprised of a bank of three drawers next to three doors with cane inserts. One door opens to the left and the other two doors bi-fold open to the right revealing three interior drawers. This dresser alone is wonderful but paired with the matching bachelor’s chest, which has the same bank of three drawers as the dresser, and butted next to the doors, making it one extra long cabinet...
