Narrow Adam Style Cabinet by Wright and Mansfield
About the Item
Fine George III style inlaid mahogany credenza of unusually narrow size by leading London manufacturers Wright and Mansfield, having rosewood and holly crossbanded top over bank of drawers with original brass hardware over four cabinet doors with inlaid oval panels and standing on turned fluted legs. The center drawer is stamped "Wright and Mansfield - 104 New Bond Street." The firm was active at that address in 1871
Wright and Mansfield were in business between 1861 and 1885. They exhibited at the London International Exhibition of 1862 – where they won a first-class medal and in 1871 the firm was awarded another medal for a drawing room in the style of ‘the Adam brothers’ shown at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition.
The Cabinet Maker & Art Furnisher (1 July 1887) described the firm as ‘[equal to] the real work of the best makers, Chippendale, Sheraton, Hepplewhite, Adam and Richardson [which was] becoming scarcer in auction rooms, and fetch[ing] high prices’.
