Rare Small Scale Walnut and Brass Credenzino from Bologna Italy, Circa 1550

About the Item

Dating to the Renaissance period (circa 1550), this diminutive credenza, known as a credenzino, is quite a rare find. At only 22 ½ inches tall and 40 inches wide, the beautiful storage piece can be placed in areas where space is at a premium, such as beneath a console or a table. Such a piece can also be displayed as an important focal point, placed on top of a larger furniture. The almost 500-year-old walnut wood, which was hand-carved, still has a rich and deep patina, accentuated by the placement of several brass roundels on the front and sides (typical of Bologna). Arranged in three columns of four on the facing, these brass embellishments are of differing sizes, all of which are surpassed by the two concentric circle nodules that adorn the two doors. A full-length shelf is visible behind the doors, which have a protruding molding that continues on the sides. This molding is mirrored by a thick cavetto that adorns both the top and the low-profile apron. Scrolled bracket feet give additional height to this amazing walnut and brass credenza from Bologna, Italy.

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Located in Dallas, TX
Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...
