About the Item
A superb solid oak sideboard dating from the 18th century, originating from a property in the Loire Valley once inhabited by a local dignitary. This refined rustic piece, with its balanced proportions, is a fine example of traditional provincial craftsmanship.
The sideboard features three paneled and molded doors — two wide ones on either side and a narrower one in the center — topped by two dovetailed drawers adorned with hand-forged iron knobs. The doors close securely with three functional locks (added at a later date), each with its original key. The sides are decorated with four recessed panels, characteristic of 18th-century country furniture. The piece stands on straight, solid legs, both simple and sturdy.
Crafted using mortise-and-tenon joinery and dense oak sourced from the local forests of the Loire Valley, this sideboard was clearly built to last generations.
The top, made from a single solid oak board, showcases a spectacular and even grain, enhanced by a beautifully aged patina. The wax finish, carefully maintained over time, lends the piece a warm, soft, and authentic appearance.
This piece is in very good original condition, fully functional and ready to use. No recent restoration has been carried out. Its exceptional preservation is due to careful family ownership and regular upkeep. Some signs of age are visible, as expected for a piece of this period, but they do not affect its integrity or functionality.
With its practical dimensions and understated elegance, this sideboard would be a perfect fit in a welcoming entryway, a characterful living room, a rustic dining area, or a chic country home. It can serve as a low buffet, a side cabinet, or refined storage for linens, documents, or decorative items.

18th Century Bleached Walnut Italian Credenza, Buffet, Sideboard
Located in Carmine, TX
Walnut credenza handcrafted in Italy in the mid 1700s and bleached recently. Don't let its delicate overall appearance fool you because, as my lower back can attest, this baby is heavy. This is a beautiful credenza that follow the typical italian style with slanted sides, which create small triangular storage spaces on either sides of the two main front doors and drawer. Overall the credenza is very straight in lines. The drawers have flat overlay fronts, and the doors show chamfered panels with a raised carving and are framed by flat molding. The carving and molding help giving the piece some depth and decoration. The bleaching process also provided the credenza with additional warmth, depth and decoration, by bringing out the beautiful grain and underlying colors of the wood. The top of the credenza is composed of boards with ogee edge nailed to the main case. On the inside the credenza is very spacious, providing plenty of storage space.
Overall this is a beautiful piece that has lived a long life, and has received some help in "hanging in there" over the years. This is a piece that will fit well with both modern and...
