A solid blackened ash credenza floating upon a brass base. The solid doors are scored vertically across the grain, and a drawing of a cliff facade is carved into them half by machine, half by hand, replicating the textures of a crumbling cliff's facade. Both monumental and subtle, the shale credenza is as striking from afar as from up close. Patterns within the carving and the wood's grain create optical illusions depending on the lights orientation. Each piece is one of a kind due to the nature of the hand carving.

Simon Johns

Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts-trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His work draws from relations between the manufactured product and the raw surroundings of the studio's wooded location. His work has been shown at Sight Unseen Offsite for NY Design Week in 2016 and 2017, at Wanted Design Manhattan 2016 and 2017, and at the Toronto Design Offsite (TODO) 2017 and 2018.
