About the Item
Both monumental and subtle, the Shale Credenza brings the intricacies of nature’s geology indoors. The wood doors are scored vertically across the grain, and details of a cliff’s facade, mapped out by Simon Johns, are carved into them replicating the textures of it’s crumbling surface. Patterns within the carving and the wood’s grain create optical illusions depending on the light’s orientation making it as striking from afar as from up close. The piece is available in low (25’’ high) and high (30’’high) versions. The credenza comes in black or grey. It comes with a black, mirrored or brass base made to order. It can also be wall mounted. Due to the hand-carved facade, no two pieces are quite the same.
*Also available in 72", 84" and 108" versions. Custom sizes available upon request.
The Shale Collection's name was inspired by the cliffs outside Simon Johns' studio, in the Missisquoi Valley in Quebec. Shale is a type of rock formation that tends to split and erode in layers, leaving behind a layered and random composition of textures. The mapping of the composition of this cliff was sketched on to the pieces of the collection, and carved out in layers, with a router and a chisel.

Simon Johns
Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts-trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His work draws from relations between the manufactured product and the raw surroundings of the studio's wooded location. His work has been shown at Sight Unseen Offsite for NY Design Week in 2016 and 2017, at Wanted Design Manhattan 2016 and 2017, and at the Toronto Design Offsite (TODO) 2017 and 2018.
