Silvio Coppola for Bernini, Cupboard Lunch , 1964

About the Item

Pranzo is a sideboard clearly inspired by the Lombard cabinetmaking tradition, crafted in walnut wood, in which the essential approach to design typical of Silvio Coppola is evident. It features a design free from ephemeral stylistic excesses, focusing instead on the aesthetic durability of the object, allowing it to withstand the passage of time and use. Pranzo is also distinguished by the sophisticated use of details typical of Coppola's functional design, such as the drawer/tray that slides out from the flip-top, easily brought to the table for convenient arrangement of cutlery and napkins. Another unique feature is the pair of side doors that open to 180°, offering practical and comfortable access to the interior space. *Pranzo*, along with other custom pieces, was originally created as furniture for the famous Milanese restaurant *El Prosper*, a place that for years served as a favorite meeting spot for graphic designers, journalists, intellectuals, architects, and entrepreneurs, who forged contracts and contributed to the production of some of the finest pieces of Italian design. The Pranzo sideboard is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Bernini, guaranteeing its uniqueness and historical value. Bibliography: Made in Italy, L. Massoni, Ed. Giorgio Mondadori & Associates Milan, p. 25, year 1986 - Ottagono #1, p. 92, year 1966 - Ottagono #30, p. 81, 87, year 1973 - Domus no. 437, year 1966 - G. Gramigna, "Repertoire of Italian Design 1950-1980," Mondadori, p. 207, year 1985. Silvio Coppola was a renowned Italian architect, born on February 7, 1927, in Pescara, and passed away on February 22, 2011, in Milan. He was known for his contributions to furniture and object design, and he was involved in projects ranging from industrial design to architecture, as well as visual communication. Coppola collaborated with various Italian design brands such as Cassina, Alessi, Kartell, and Bernini. For the latter, he not only conceived significant design products, highly sought after in prestigious auctions today, but also played a role in creating important corporate visual communication tools such as catalogs, invitations, and posters. He departed from the obvious choice of coated paper, preferring transparent PVC sheets hot-pressed with a layer of metal. He also collaborated with major industries including Bayer, Montecatini, Monteschell, Zucchi, Cinzano, Parmalat, and Feltrinelli. Among the numerous awards he received, notable ones include the Golden Palm of Advertising in 1962 and the European Rizzoli Prize in 1966. His work was influenced by modernism and contributed to shaping the style and aesthetics of that era. His significant contributions to the worlds of design and architecture are still highly appreciated and studied today.
