About the Item

Dated 1688 James II period oak joined press cupboard from Northern England, probably Westmoreland and the Lake District area. The top has a lovely crown molding, over five hand carved panels, with heavily carved interlace pattern on the three doors. The decoration of complex strap work interlace displays the Scandinavian and Celtic influence of the region in the 17th century. The interlace patterns are very interesting in that they are what 17th century people believed snakes looked like. The snakes have heads on them which look like birds. In the 17th century, you will see naturalistic and fantastic animal details throughout the craftsman carvings. These mimic many Anglo-Viking stonework carvings throughout England. The cupboard is in two pieces, and the base has three large doors, all with heavily molded panels and include unbelievably detailed hand carvings to show what the craftsmen of that time and place could accomplish. The doors open to reveal shelving. The cupboard is also heavily decorated on the sides, for an astonishing view from any side of the piece. The panels on the sides mimic the ones on the front, with interlace patterns and florals, over simple designs at the bottom. This is the finest 17th century piece we have ever had the pleasure to offer. It is truly a piece of English history. Serious inquiries only.
