From a French Antique Dealer who contacted us Hi, I have dealt in French furniture for 50 year and thought you might like to know the following! The box-bed or lit clos in French is an enclosed bed that looks like a cupboard , sometimes open but mostly with a single or double sliding doors. The form originates in Western Europe from late medieval times. The box-bed is closed on all sides by panels of wood, or set into a wall of the dwelling One enters it by removing curtains, opening a hinged or sliding door or doors on the front. These were used until the 19th or very early 20th century. In early times and until the 19th century they were a safe place to sleep out of reach of the pigs and fowl which often also lived in the largely single room cottages and even doubled up as somewhere to leave small children safe from wolves when the parents went out to work in the fields! This Box-Bed would have been removed from the wall and then built out as a cabinet.
