Period George II Oak Cupboard

About the Item

This wonderful old cupboard is crafted of sturdy English oak and was made circa 1740. Retaining its fine old surface, richly waxed and polished, the cabinet is comprised of a large two-door upper section the extends past the door line into the lower body and beneath that are three drawers for further storage. The interior is fitted with pegs for hanging clothes and the lower section would have been used for folded and stored goods but could easily accommodate step back shelving further increasing the piece's functional ability beyond its visual power. Of an impressive architectural form the breakfront center projection, raised panel doors, large molded overhanging cornice, and the heavy bracket feet give this piece a commanding presence. The hinges are original but the pulls have been replaced. The cabinet comes in two sections allowing for easier moving and transportation but gives the appearance of massive solidity. Adding to its detail the cabinet's upper section is terminated at the breakfront and ends with quarter columns that are nicely modeled with plane simple capitals and fluting to give a fine play of light moving across the broken and unbroken surface of the deep rich patina in the oak.
