19th Century Burr Walnut Pop Up Davenport Desk

About the Item

We are pleased to be able to offer for sale this very attractive example of an antique Davenport Desk. It is supplied with the original tooled, gilded, leather writing inset still intact and the desk stands on a pair of sturdy solid walnut cabriole legs which are hand carved. The term "Pop-Up" used in the description refers to the desk's secret compartment, a very popular feature with Davenport desks, which pops up to be used when required. This secret compartment contains three useful drawers along with a variety of pigeon holes which can be used for storing your pens, letters, stamps, and other stationery items. The secret compartment rises up by itself when a hidden catch is pressed and is powered by means of a clever system of pulleys and a concealed weight. There is no doubt that this piece of antique furniture has been made by a master craftsman. Burr Walnut is an expensive and difficult wood to work with and historically only the very best craftsmen were able to work with it. The quality of the work on this Davenport Desk is of the highest quality as is the quality of the Burr Walnut that has been used. To further add to its usefulness, this Davenport desk has been finished on all sides so that it can stand freely in the middle of a room which means it is a very decorative and versatile item of furniture. This Davenport desk is fitted with four drawers on one side with more than enough space for your stationery and everything else you may need. The other side is fitted with dummy drawers so that it does not have to be placed against a wall. This is a sturdy and well-built desk that stands on bun feet which are still fitted with the original recessed brass and porcelain castors. This Antique Davenport Desk has been carefully and sympathetically restored in our own workshops by our own craftsmen. This is a fine and very rare antique Victorian burr walnut twin pedestal partners desk, Circa 1860 in date. It is made from fabulous burr walnut, the rectangular top with a fabulous inset gold tooled green leather writing surface. One side has an arrangement of three drawers in the frieze over a pair of pedestals each with three graduated drawers, the other side has a central frieze drawer with a cupboard in each pedestal, each opens to a central shelf.
