19th English Brass Banded Mahogany Lap Desk With Gilt Tooled Leather

About the Item

19th c., England, a figured mahogany lap desk banded in brass to protect a piece that was in regular use and likely travelled with the owner. The hinged top opens to a gilt tooled leather writing surface and fitted storage compartments. The fitted interior has two inkwells flanking a pen cove, under which a small hidden storage space is accessed. A monogrammed brass plaque is centered in the top.A brass rosette escutcheon surrounds the keyhole. The key is retained and the lock functions. Dimensions: 6.5"h x 18"w x 10"d Condition: Good/Fair, hairline cracks on the lid, leather possibly replaced, crack repair to bottom board. Remains a handsome and useful item.
