About the Item

American Chippendale walnut slant lid desk, Philadelphia, circa 1785, with presumed descent in the family of Thomas Livezey (1750-1830). A very powerful desk with presence, there is great intensity in the burl walnut planks selected for the facade of the case. The top of the desk is finished over the drop lid, lowering over it’s original hinges to reveal a spacious interior with four pidgeon-holes over small oxbow drawers on either side flanking a gorgeous burl walnut prospect door, this opening on it’s original hinges to reveal a removable dovetailed box; it can be pulled forward from the desk to reveal drawers behind the box. The face of the desk features a pair of candle drawers with deeply chamfered lids that slide in grooves on the frame of the drawer, pushing back to reveal the stored candlesticks; these drawers also act as the functional lopers for the desk lid, both flanking the top drawer. This top drawer is the only one with any adjustment, the original brasses having been moved at one point to perfectly line up with the brasses below them - all other brasses are untouched in their original position. Each drawer is crafted of yellow pine secondary woods in the typical manner with crisply cut dovetailing, the deeply chamfered bottom boards set in grooves on the sides and affixed along the back edge with mostly original nails. The back of the case is crafted with vertical yellow pine boards tacked along the perimeter with original cut iron nails. The case rests over gorgeous scroll cut ogival feet, all remaining original except one facing and the blocking on one foot. For the serious collector of very fine Americana, this is an outstanding acquisition in an excellent state of preservation. Provenance: Freeman’s, Sale 1195, April 24 2004, lot 2319, sold $10,575 USD (inc. premium). Measurements: 44 1/8” H x 42 3/8” W (at feet) x 22 7/8” D (at feet); 30 7/8” H from ground to top of opened lid, writing surface 27 5/8” W. Condition report: Early but not original finish with later refreshing and polishing. Age appropriate wear throughout: cracks, shrinkage gaps, extensive finish wear/discoloration/loss; the top in particular has finish discoloration and loss. Brasses are original, the top drawer brasses have been shifted to be in line with the brasses below. Front proper right foot with a replaced side facing and replaced interior blocking - other feet are original with original blocking. Original locks, some patching in drawer blade above lock. Retains two original keys, most locks not completely functional. We have 104 images of this desk available upon request.
