Antique English George III Chippendale Style Mahogany Library Desk

About the Item

A George III mahogany freestanding library desk in the Chippendale style. Designed to be used in the centre of a room and with storage to front and back similar to a partners’ desk, it has a gilt tooled green leather writing surface set within a crossbanded top with a carved moulded edge. The kneehole side with nine cockbeaded finely dovetailed oak lined drawers with gilt brass handles, and the opposing side with three moulded panels concealing two cupboards each with a removable shelf, similarly panelled to the remaining sides and all raised on a plinth base with further carved moulding and concealed castors. Overall this is a handsome desk of a good size and in solid useable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and some signs of old restorations and repairs in places. There is some cracking to the central drawer front and another, and some repairs to the drawer fronts where the handles and locks have been changed. There is one drawer lock missing and a key is stuck in another lock, the other drawers do not have keys but it should be possible to have keys cut at our locksmith and both cupboard doors do have a working key. The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately Width - 52in (132cm) Depth - 34.75in (88.5cm) Height - 32.25in (82cm) Please note this is a one piece desk.
