About the Item

We've had an opportunity over the last few weeks to bring in a rather large selection of entirely hand crafted reproductions, these being exquisitely crafted with period techniques and the finest materials. This is a close rival to the American Chippendale Style Secretary Desk in the Goddard Manner we catalogued just a few weeks ago, both being of unreal attention to detail and a showing of remarkable skill. The present example is such an impressive display, the upper doors opening on large brass hinges to reveal an orderly and spacious interior of divided pigeon-hole slots and drawers beneath a fully enclosed bonnet top. The two robust shell carvings that are inset directly beneath each crest arch are deeply carved with a fluent hand, a bold introduction to the three shell carvings enclosed within the slant front portion of the desk. The lid rests on two lopers that are easily withdrawn from the case, revealing a handsomely fitted interior that carefully parallels the distinctive manner of the Northern Shore of Massachusetts during the late 18th Century. The prospect door is flanked by document drawers with columns under flame turned finials, these fully dovetailed along the inner edges and of careful craftsmanship. The same attentions are shown to all of the small drawers in the interior. Flanking the graduated drawers of the lower case are fluted Corinthian columns that frame the case over the bold and prone ogee bracket feet, these being of perfect shape and remaining in excellent condition. The back of the case shows dovetail joinery in the rear feet supports, most securely locking the rear feet facings to the case. A piece that demonstrates pride in doing a job right despite the untold hours required for such a project, this is a piece that sets apart whatever interior it becomes a part of and was crafted to last centuries if well cared for. It would be a prized piece that can be passed down through the generations of your family. Measurements: [total] 96" H x 23 1/8" D x 41 3/4" W; 30 3/4" H to writing surface; bottom section is 45 1/4" H and top section is 48 3/4" H when separated Condition Report: Excellent original surface throughout with only minimal wear (light scratches, abrasions, blemishes etc. as expected from use), color remaining vibrant and deep. Retains original hardware - also includes two keys, but these are a bit sticky in operating the locks and probably not original; key for prospect door not included. Shrink crack to the right side, quite minimal. Overall an exceedingly fine piece in outstanding condition.
