Biedermeir Style French Wooden Writing Desk-Table with Drawer

About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. A fine oak wood writing desk (or coffee table) in the Biedermeier style; the rectangular top is well-proportioned, below it is a convenient drawer with internal dividers equipped with a key lock, the whole is supported by two elegant and solid supports in the shape of a stylized lyre, separated from each other by a massive footrest that fits perpendicularly with two sturdy structures that firmly support the desk with four points of support. Very peculiar and interesting is the worn appearance of the inside of the drawer, with stains of various kinds but mainly of ancient ink, this leads us to think and imagine which and how many people have taken turns in using the desk; our imaginations were later confirmed by the antiquarian from whom we bought it at his store in Bourg-en-Brasse ( a pretty and ancient French commune capital of the Ain department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region); the antiquarian, who was very professional and trustworthy, assured us that the small table was made between 1870 and 1880 by an artisanal carpenter's shop in the area, which closed in 1932, and was used in the workshop of the town's pharmacy, which is one of the oldest pharmacies in France founded in 1782; just in the south wing of this imposing and ancient building was the fascinating laboratory where apothecaries prepared for years, infusions, decoctions and other medicinal remedies whose recipes were probably written on our very table, housed among stills, presses, mortars and stoves. The antiquarian came into possession several years ago when the pharmacy turned into the Hotel-Museum (see photo) and disposed of some of the furniture. This desk, rich in history, aesthetically is an understated and harmonious piece of furniture, in which the taste for curved lines, typical of the Biedermeier style, is maximally emphasized, giving the object a timeless elegance. Measures width cm.68, depth cm.48, and height cm.73. The object is in good condition, we did not consider doing any restoration to thus maintain its beautiful patina that attests to its antiquity and authenticity. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

  • Provencal Style French Extending Table
    Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest that you read the whole description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our items. French extending table in Provencal style made of oak wood; the top has a precious "parqueterie Versailles" workmanship, this name because the design of the decoration was made on the model of a floor of the Palace of Versailles; the underneath and the legs are ebonized wood with some light carving; the legs are "cabriole "that is, a design shaped in two curves, the upper one convex and the lower one concave; a shape known to the ancient Chinese and Greeks, which came back into fashion in Europe at the end of the 17th century, when it was incorporated into the more curvilinear styles introduced in England, France and Holland; with this type of leg, the design becomes very pleasing, well-proportioned and elegant. The term parquet is of French origin and seems to have originated in the 1600s, a time when wooden floors were at their most popular. The word parquet comes from the technique of marqueterie or parqueterie i.e., inlay applied to fine furniture. The table extends easily, the two extensions, originally, slide out from under the top and fit with the top itself in a perfect and aesthetically pleasing manner. This work of art was created by a true master cabinetmaker in a perfect and meticulous manner in France between 1910 and 1915 in an artisan workshop in the artisan area of Bru, in the department of Vosges in the Grand Est Region. The style is typically Provençal, but the finishing of the top and the choice to create a pleasant contrast, using black for the part underneath, give it a strong aesthetic and make it much more elegant and refined than Provençal furniture...
